Alien Breed 3D (1995): A noteworthy FPS for Amiga.
Alien Trilogy (1996): A well-recieved game based on the first Alien films.
Battlefield 1942 (2002): This game became so popular that it somehow started a huge franchise. I have no idea how that happened.
Battlezone (1980): A classic from the arcade. Technically a "first person combat vehicle game", but it is still in first-person and you shoot, and that is enough for me to be an FPS.
BioShock (2007): A spiritual successor to System Shock.
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold (1993): Based on the same engine as Wolfenstein 3D. A game with charm.
Blood (1997): A bloody, gothic game made with the Build engine. It got its own cult following. A part of the "Build trinity"; the three most popular games based on the Build engine.
Call of Duty (2003): Oddly enough, this game started a huge franchise, just like Battlefield. It makes no sence to me.
Catacomb 3-D (1991): The game that were the foundation to id softwares later game, Wolfenstein 3D.
Chex Quest (1996): The first digital game you could get in boxes of cereal. This game was made for kids. Ironically, it was made with the same engine as DOOM.
Daikatana (2000): The game that made you Romeros b*tch.
Descent (1995): Another first person combat vehicle game. This game added new technical aspects to the FPPS genre.
Deus Ex (2000): A game that got a strong cult following.
Doom (1993): A game that evolved the FPS genre in many ways (especially in the technical department). It soon became one of the most popular games in the world.
Duke Nukem 3D (1996): Not the first game build on the Build engine, but for sure the most popular one. A part of the "Build trinity"; the three most popular games based on the Build engine.
GoldenEye 007 (1997): The game that popularised FPS games for game consols. Before this game, FPS games were most common on PC.
Half-Life (1998): One of the most well-made games up to that time.
Halo: Combat Evolved (2001): A launch title for XBOX and one of the largest successes for XBOX.
Heretic (1994): A fantasy game made with the Doom engine added something extra. One of the better games based on the Doom engine.
Hovertank 3D (1991): One of id Softwares early attempts on a FPS game. Or rather first person combat vehicle game.
Maze War (1973 / 1974)::One of the earlyest FPS games.
Medal of Honor (1999:) I have no idea why these crappy games sell so well. Can someone explain it to me? PLEASE!
MIDI Maze (1987): A game for Atari ST. If you have two Amiga STs and a MIDI cable, you can play MIDI Maze against another player.
Quake (1996): The third major FPS franchise from id software. As normal, Quake pushed the technical limits.
Redneck Rampage (1997): A well-known (but overrated) game based on the Build engine.
Rise of the Triad (1994): Was supposed to be a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D, but things changes. Therefore, the developer of Rise of the Triad, Apogee, went absolutely bananas with this game.
Serious Sam (2001): A game that can be describes as "Doom meets Duke Nukem 3D"
Shadow warrior (1997): You play as Lo Wang, an Asian version of Duke Nukem. Shadow warrior is a part of the "Build trinity"; the three most popular games based on the Build engine.
Spasim (1974): One of the earliest FPS games.
Strife: Quest for the Sigil (1996): Another notable FPS / RPG game based on the Doom engine.
Super 3D Noah's Ark (1994): Google the name an add the names Nintendo and Wolfenstein.
System Shock (1994): A FPS adventure game that were technically innovative.
Trespasser (1998): It got boobs and dinosaurs. That's sneaky marketing!
Turok: Dinosaur hunter (1997): Along with Goldeney, Turok begame one of the first popular FPS games cor consoles.
Ultima underworld (1992): A FPS / RPG game that inspired many creators of other FPS games.
Unreal (1998): A successful game based on the Unreal Engine. The engine made even more success: Many well known games are based on the Unreal Engine.
Witchaven (1995): A noteworthy FPS game with RPG elements.
Wolfenstein 3D (1992): The granddad of FPS games. The game thet popularised FPS games.
